HOW WATER TEMPERATURE AFFECTS YOUR SKIN?

Updated: Aug 27, 2023

Your skin collects dirt, oil and impurities throughout the day as well as dead skin cells on the surface. Washing your face will help get rid of these skin irritants that causes clogged pores, premature aging and acne breakouts. When it comes to face cleansing or washing, the products that you use, how often you wash your face, and the water temperature are equally important factors to consider. So, what is the ideal temperature for face washing you might wonder? Let’s find out.

Cold water and your skin

Using cold water for your skin does come with some benefits such as promoting blood circulation, de-puffing and leaving skin feeling cool and refreshed afterward. It also tightens the look of pores, preventing dirt, bacteria and impurities to get in. That being said, if you use cold water consistently to wash your face, bacteria, oil and dirt that are already trapped in your pores wouldn’t be able to get out, causing clogged pores and other skin problems. The trick here is to start with lukewarm water to get rid of all impurities, then rinse with cold water if you enjoy the tightening and healthy glow effect to your skin.

Hot water and your skin

Prolonged contact with hot water will cause your skin to turn red as its natural moisture is stripped and leave the skin drier than it was before your cleansing. This also allows for dead skin cells to accumulate on the skin’s surface. There are some benefits of using hot water including help to relieve stress, relaxing, quick warm up and works for nasal congestion. However, it is not ideal for any skin types and skin concerns. For oily skin, stripping the skin’s natural oils causes our body to produce more oil to compensate, resulting in unwanted acne breakout.

What is the ideal water temperature for the skin?

When it comes to what temperature is ideal for your skin, lukewarm or cool water is friendly for your skin. Lukewarm water could ensure the facial cleanser works properly to remove impurities without stripping your skin’s natural oils. Cool water is gentle to use for your skin if you prefer an alternative to lukewarm water. Washing your face twice a day, morning and evening, will help get rid of these skin irritants that cause clogged pores, premature aging and acne breakouts.
